Candidates with knowledge on magnetism will be preferred. The smoothing will be done with grazing angle ion beams or by lamination, to obtain roughness of the order of 0.2nm in required buffer layers used for MRAM and low resistance junction devices. The effectiveness of the smoothing method will be compared with others developed within the ULTRASMOOTH Network. The growth of ferromagnetic layers with improved interfaces will be studied in junctions and GMR structures, in particular for ultrathin barriers (<0.7nm) used in biosensors and magnetic read heads targeted at 1 Tbit/inch2 recording densities. The INESC-MN Group (www.inesc-mn.pt) is well equipped in thin film deposition, magnetic material characterization, device microfabrication and device testing. A significant amount of work will be undertaken in a clean room environment. The position is available from September 2005 and will be offered on a fixed term contract for 24 months.
