Dear Colleague, we would like to bring to your attention a recently published paper devoted to the subject of Multiple Scattering of ions in matter and its role, among others, in the interpretation of depth profiling experiments in Ion Beam Analysis. The paper presents in detail the physical laws governing scattering cross sections, a renewed and comprehensive approach to the statistical theory of MS, including the calculation of angular and lateral displacement distributions, as well as the laws of their combinations. Various applications, in particular in IBA, are described. The paper contains many numerical results on detailed angular distributions that are available electronically. No special knowledge of MS theory is required as the paper presents the theory in a didactic way and is self contained. The paper may be read as well as an introduction into the field as for advanced theory and for results pertaining to less common cases like those of high energy or even relativistic ions, heavy ions in light element media, etc. A special Web site is devoted to the paper. In addition to the abstract it contains the detailed Table of Matters and list of symbols that NIMB does not use to publish; they may be downloaded in pdf format, as well as a list of the most important formulae. This table gives a good insight into the structure of the paper and is of help for reading it. All the numerical data may be downloaded in ASCII format and important calculation programs are also available. The site will be kept continuously updated with new results in the field and special calculations for various experimental situations that may show up. The readers may register their name and e-mail address, so as to be kept informed each time when the site is updated. The site address is www.mfa.kfki.hu/ms The title of the paper is Small angle multiple scattering of fast ions, physics, stochastic theory and numerical calculations, G. Amsel, G. Battistig and A. L'Hoir, Nucl. Instr. and Methods B 201 (2003) 325-388 We think that this paper may be of interest to many of our colleagues and we thank you for visiting our web site.
