This position is for one year with a possible extension for a second year. The position fits in the framework of the experimental research performed at the "Ion and Molecular Beam Laboratory" of IKS. The two main implantation related research areas are (i) the study of ion implantation induced defects in group III nitrides (GaN, AlN, InGaN,.), and the synthesis of light-emitting precipitates by ion implantation; and (ii) lattice location of implanted radioactive impurities in semiconductors (in collaboration with CERN, Geneva and ITN, Lisbon). The major goal of these projects is to investigate the link between the structural and optical properties of these semiconductor based systems upon implantation of (mainly) rare earth ions. The characterization largely consists of ion beam analysis (conventional Rutherford backscattering and channeling spectrometry, emission channeling, PIXE, nuclear reaction analysis.) complemented with high-resolution X-ray diffraction and luminescence measurements. For more details on the experimental facilities and the ongoing research in our group, please visit http://www.fys.kuleuven.ac.be/iks/nvsf/nvsf.html. We are looking for enthusiastic people, who like to work in an international team. He/she will also assist in guiding the research of PhD and Master's students related to this topic. The candidate should have extensive experience with ion beam techniques (including practical handling of accelerators and ion sources), ion implantation and ion beam analysis. Specific experience with other relevant techniques for structural and/or optical characterization of thin films is a benefit. Interested applicants should have a PhD in solid-state physics (or related), engineering or materials science.
