(This can be booked in the Baggage Claim area of the Ferihegy I and II airports, costs 1200 HUF or 6 USD). From the Nepstadion bus station, take one of the regular country buses to Matrahaza. The price is about 800 HUF or 4 USD. Get off at Hotel Ozon, just before the village Matrahaza is reached. The updated bus schedule, valid on the days of arrival and departure can be found here. More info on travel is available at the end of this circular.

  • DEPARTURE INFORMATION:

The conference will adjourn on Sun, June 21, 1998, 10:00. Transportation shall be organized similarly to the arrival schedule. One bus is scheduled to leave at 10:30 on Sun, June 21, 1998 from before the Hotel Ozon. Possible earlier departure for those who need to catch an earlier flight or train from Budapest will be available upon request.

  • PLACE AND DATE:

Following previous workshops in Aspen, Jinan, Perugia, Santa Fe, Ringberg, Krakow and Nijmegen, the 8-th International Workshop on Multiparticle Production will take place at the conference hotel "Ózon" situated in a beautiful forest close to the village of Mátraháza, near to the city of Gyöngyös located 80 km northeast from Budapest, the capital of Hungary.

Arrival of participants is planned for Sunday, June 14, departure for Sunday, June 21, 1998. Sessions will be held from Monday, June 15 in the morning to Sunday, June 21 in the morning.

  • SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM

The topics of the workshop will be a comparison of "Correlations and Fluctuations" observed in the hadronic final states of all types of high energy collisions, from e+e- to heavy ion reactions. Special emphasis will be put on the interaction among the experts of correlation and fluctuation studies in particle physics and in high energy heavy ion communities. A larger than usual fraction of the speakers will thus be invited from the heavy ion community and an extra day will be added to cover in detail the topics of the workshop. We reserved time for both formal and informal discussions throughout the meeting.
The preliminary scientific program is available. The updated list of participants is available. Note that we had some last minute cancellations and also some new participants. During this meeting we would like to dedicate talks to the memory of the late P. Carruthers and V. N. Gribov, focusing on the current new directions that are related with their heritage. We shall have one invited review talk, on chaotic scattering and symbolic dynamics by T. Tél.

  • PROCEEDINGS

The proceedings will be published by World Scientific Publishing Co. Ltd. and a copy will be sent to all participants. The deadline for submission of camera-ready manuscripts will be August 31, 1998. Page allocation per speaker and format required by the publisher will be handed out to speakers during the workshop.

Thanks to those participants, who transferred their fees in advance. By now, they should have received an acknowledgement of the received amount by fax. Registration will be available after the arrival of Bus 1 to Hotel Ozon on Sun, June 14, 1988, from about 16:00. The registration for late arrivals shall be available during the whole conference period.

  • IMPORTANT NOTE ON CURRENCY EXCHANGE:

We recommend that you change your currency to Hungarian Forints (HUF) upon arrival. This can be done e.g. in the arrival halls of Ferihegy I and Ferihegy II international airports. There is a large number of ATM -s scattered all over Budapest, including both Ferihegy I and Ferihegy II airports. Expenses related to CF'98 can be payed upon arrival to the meeting in HUF only (cash), advance payments were possible by bank transfer to the CF'98 account. Hotel phone and minibar or other expenses can be payed to the hotel directly with VISA, EUROCARD, AMEX or DINERS CLUB credit cards. Neither currency exchange, nor ATM is available at the Hotel. Nearest banks and ATM-s are available during normal working hours in the neighbouring city of Gyöngyös, about 15 min. drive from Mátraháza.

  • ON TENTATIVE ACCOMMODATION IN BUDAPEST, BEFORE OR AFTER CF'98

Some of the CF'98 participants may wish to stay in Budapest, before or after CF'98. They are requested to make their own hotel reservations (if it was not done before). Information on a broader range of hotels in Budapest is available. In the center of the city (Pest side) we recommend the following hotel:

    Hotel Professors' House,
    Address: H - 1146 Budapest XIV, Ajtosi-Durer sor 19-21
    Tel: (+36 1) 2 51 35 63
    Fax: (+36 1) 3 43 81 57

where a single bed room costs 6660 HUF or about 33 USD. If you like to stay here before CF'98 starts, we recommend to take an airport minibus to this hotel, that can be booked in the baggage claim area of the Ferihegy airports. If you plan to stay there after the CF'98, the conference bus will take you to that place upon request. Before or after the conference, some participants shall stay at

    Hotel Mercure Buda
    Budapest I., Krisztina Krt 41-43,
    Tel: (+36 1) 356 63 33,
    Fax: (+36 1) 355 69 64,

5 min. walk from the Déli pu (Déli railway station and major traffic hub) The conference bus No.1 shall leave from before this hotel on Sunday, at 12:00.

  • NOTES ON SIGHT-SEEING IN BUDAPEST

Presently, we have a crime problem in Budapest. We recommend that the participants do not street-park their car at night (use hotel parking instead), do not walk alone at night, do not look lost even if they are, stay out of parks all night, stay away from strangers offering ``good deals", try to avoid crowded places and guard their wallets/purses carefully. Clarify the prices of meals and drinks in restaruants before you place an order. If you have to take a taxi, we recommend to call 2 222 222 (Fotaxi), or look for taxi-cabs with a chequer-board like strip on the sides. In any case, clarify the price before you sit into the taxi cab. From the airport, use the Airport Minibus shuttle instead of a taxi. Guidelines of Safety in New York, 1990 apply. Budapest has a cheap and efficient public transportation system of buses, trolleybuses, trams and subways. One line ticket presently costs 70 HUF, which must be validated on the buses or at the gates of the subway stations. A daily ticket, a Budapest card and local maps are available at major subway stations. An interactive, searchable map of Budapest is also available.

The above statements may exaggerate a bit the situation in Budapest these days, however, we suggest to obey them: Better be safe than sorry. We also hope that the above guidelines will help you in enjoying the unique beauty of Budapest, without unfortunate interferences.

  • FURTHER NOTES ON TRANSPORTATION

    By air:
Hotel Ózon can be reached via the Budapest Ferihegy I or II International Airports. The Ferihegy Airports are providing convenient minibus services to any part of Budapest for a reasonable price. You may chose to take such an airport shuttle to the country bus station Nepstadion. There is a direct bus connection between the Nepstadion station and Hotel Ózon through the country town Gyöngyös, to the montain resort village of Mátraháza. The bus schedule was be revised on May 21, 1998; the new version is valid on Sun, June 14 and Sun, June 21 as well.

    By train:
Good train connection exists between Budapest and the other parts of Europe. Train schedules can be provided on request. When arriving to a major railway station in Budapest, take a subway and change to line 3 (the red line) if you arrived to the Nyugati pu. On the subway line 3 (the red line) take the trains going to the Ors vezer tere direction and get off at the Nepstadion. Change to a bus at the Nepstadion bus station. The Budapest-Mátra buses stop directly before Hotel Ózon, the conference site.

IMPORTANT NOTE : Conference buses are described in the beginning of this document. If you miss all the conference buses, and the last bus from the Nepstadion you may call Hotel Ozon at (06 -37 - 374 004) from Hungary to request a Hotel Minibus. Or, you can ask for an Airport Minibus to Hotel Ozon, for an estimated 80 USD. We strongly discourage using a taxi in Budapest . If you have no other choice than to take a taxi, clarify the price before you sit into the cab.

    By car:
The Mátra hills can be reached by car following the highway M3 from Budapest. Head for Gyongyos and when in Gyongyos make a left to the Matra hills (direction Matrahaza). After Matrafured, look for the bus-stop signs, one of these will be next to Hotel Ozon.

    Passport and visa:
Please make sure your passport is not expired and you have your visa (if required).

  • SOCIAL PROGRAM

A small welcome party will be organized on Monday evening a concert on Friday and a banquet on Saturday. A halfday excursion will take place on Wednesday to to Eger, a beautiful medieval city in North-East of Hungary, with strong traditions in vine production. Bikaver or Bull's blood is a vine from this region of Hungary. The conference center itself is situated at the crossing point of several forest hiking routes allowing for hikes lasting between 5 minutes and 5 days (maps are recommended and will be available). Ping-pong tables, a sauna and a tennis yard will be available, as well as a small bar for informal discussions during the evenings.

  • ATTENDANCE

Attendance will be by invitation only and limited to about 60 participants actively working in the field. In principle, every participant will be given time for a short presentation, see the preliminary schedule of the talks. 45 min talks and 30 min talks are scheduled presently, all include 5 minutes for discussions.

If you have not yet done so, please inform us also about your planned arrival and departure schedule, and in particular, if your travel plans change .
