De laudibus eloquentiae

1510
Manuscript (Ms. 39)
Biblioteca Classense, Ravenna

This manuscript, dedicated to Pope Leo X (Giovanni de' Medici, son of Lorenzo il Magnifico), contains a sermon that Raffaele Brandolini Lippo (c. 1465-1517) gave at the church of Sant'Eustachio in Rome on 18 October 1513, praising the plan for reform of studies promoted by the Pope. Brandolini taught rhetoric and was a renowned composer of Latin prose.

On folio 1 the Medici coat of arms and family devices appear in the decoration. The artist who executed the decoration may have been a pupil of the Florentine illuminator Attavante.
