The codex is one of the most famous and best known illuminated manuscript. It contains 831 pages with 110 pictures all of them in a decorated frame. The illuminations were executed by several Flemish masters including Alexander and Simon Bening, Hans Memling and Gerard David. Gerard Horenbout illuminated the whole of the Calendar.

The picture presented here depicts the Mystical Attributes of the Virgin. The symbols include the spring of living water, the mirror without stain, the enclosed garden with the fountain, the rose bed and the pure white lilies, the olive tree and the flowering branch, the David tower and the celestial city, the gate of heaven, the morning star, and so on.
