The Cardinal of Lorraine

1550s
Manuscript
Musée des Beaux-Arts, Nancy

This miniature from a manuscript formerly in the library of the cardinal of Lorraine represents the prelate in a chapel, convincingly rendered in perspective, with polychrome marble decor. Apparently this structure was an invention of the artist, for nothing remotely similar was to be found in any of the cardinal's many residences.
