Sinope Gospels (Codex Sinopensis)

mid 6th century
Manuscript (Ms. suppl. gr. 1286), 300 x 250 mm
Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris

This codex is a fragment of a 6th-century illuminated Greek Gospel Book. The Vienna Genesis, the Codex Purpureus Rossanensis (Rossano Gospels) and the Codex Sinopensis constitute a related group of mid 6th-century manuscripts written on purple dyed parchment. They are dated on the basis of the style of the miniatures.

The style of illustrations suggests Palestine or Syria as the place of its origin. There are only 44 extant folios which carry unframed miniatures at the bottom of the page. Folio 29 recto shows the healing of a blind man from Jericho.

The codex was purchased in 1899 at Sinope (hence its name), by a French officer from an old Greek woman.
