Federico Zuccaro is best known for his theoretical treatise on art. He went to Spain, stayed three years at the Escorial (1585-1588), and returned richly rewarded. Chains were a favourite gift of princely patrons to their artists. Around 1588 Federico Zuccaro proudly depicted himself in a self-portrait wearing just such an honour from Philip II, received for his services in decorating the Escorial.
