The Judgment of Paris

c. 1605
Oil on copper, 22 x 28 cm
Szépművészeti Múzeum, Budapest

This composition on a small copper plate is divided by groups of trees into three parts. It contains only real elements but is nevertheless artificial in its entirety, and fits into the group of imaginary landscapes. The figures show Italian influences. All postures, daring foreshortenings and distorted poses can be followed back to Michelangelo, Raphael and Parmigianino. However, the painting belongs to the old Netherlandish tradition, too. In the finely chiseled execution of the details, minute enough to require the use of magnifying glass for examination, the heritage of the Van Eyck brothers is continued.
