In this painting the prince is represented in a landscape during his exile in Switzerland from 1793 to 1795, when he was a math and language teacher in the Reichenau high school, using the name Chabaud-Latour. The ambiance is quite characteristic of the period: mountains had become very popular since Rousseau; and the prince wanted to be portrayed as a citizen-prince. Another version of the painting, dated 1818, is kept in the Musée Condé in Chantilly.
