Oil on panel, 36 x 49 cm
Private collection

In 1832, disguised as a commoner, Marie-Caroline de Bourbon-Sicile, Duchess of Berry crossed the French border into the Vendée in an attempt to spark a revolt against King Louis-Philippe with the hopes of placing her son, Henri Dieudonné, comte de Chambord, on the throne. Her attempt failed and she was forced to spend the rest of her life in exile in Italy and Austria.
