This painting can be considered of the "parade" type developed by Cappelle shortly before. On the smooth surface of the calm sea a number of stately ships are arranged. The perfection and detail with which van de Velde delineates the scene are outstanding. The artist was principally a "portraitist" of ships, representing these vessels in great detail, encouraging the viewer to linger over the smallest details - the masts, sails, coats of arms on the prow, flags, etc.
