When preparing for a painting Adriaen van de Velde first made a small compositional sketch. He then drew separate detailed studies from life of the figures that were to populate his landscapes. He often portrayed a figure twice on a single sheet in different poses or dress. The drawing shown in the picture is an example of such variation on a theme. This figure was used in a landscape painting now in the Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe.
