Portrait of Queen Victoria

1894
Oil on canvas, 41 x 31 cm
Hirschsprung Collection, Copenhagen

As one of Europe's leading court painters, Tuxen produced a number of remarkably free oil sketches, among them the present portrait of Queen Victoria.

Queen Victoria (1819-1901) was queen of Great Britain for 63 years (1837-1901). To date, she is the second longest reigning British monarch after Queen Elizabeth II. Victoria's reign saw great cultural expansion; advances in industry, science, and communications; and the building of railways and the London Underground.
