TRINQUESSE, Louis-Rolland
(b. 1745, Paris, d. ca. 1800)

The Courtship

-
Oil on canvas, 194 x 133 cm
Private collection

Although one of the most brilliant genre painters of his day, Trinquesse was never elected to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture because his choice of subjects did not meet the "serious" criteria set by the arts administration under Louis XVI. His genre paintings were collected by private patrons and he also painted a handful of portraits.
