The painting done in 1874 by Gioacchino Toma depicts Luisa Sanfelice in a prison cell, which according to tradition is located in Castel Sant'Elmo in Naples. The painting shows an episode of the Neapolitan revolution of 1799, when the noblewoman was sentenced to death on charges of having disclosed the conspiracy against the Neapolitan Republic. The execution was postponed several times, the she was beheaded in September 1800 in the Piazza del Mercato in Naples.
