Ceiling decoration

1724-29
Fresco
Palazzo Patriarcale, Udine

The picture shows the ceiling of the Sala Rossa (Sala del Tribunale) in the Palazzo Patriarcale. The proportions of the room were ill-suited for the design of an elaborate ceiling, therefore the painter divided the only slightly curving ceiling into a central panel surrounded by four satellites. The central panel depicts the Judgment of Solomon from an extremely low angle. In the irregularly shaped corner panels the prophets Isaah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel sit enthroned in solemn poses. These alternate with stucco medallions by Giovanni Maria Andreoli.
