TENIERS, David the Younger (b. 1610, Antwerpen, d. 1690, Bruxelles) |
A Cobbler in his Workshop1671Oil on canvas, 37 x 28 cm Private collection | |
This painting renowned work in the eighteenth century, partly due to its dissemination through engravings. It was the source of inspiration for a number of French artists, perhaps most notably Jean-Siméon Chardin. There is a direct connection between the present painting and one of Chardin's work in the Louvre, The Canary, which shows a woman teaching her canary to sing. The two works not only share thematic similarities, but also compositional ones. The painting is signed and dated lower right, on the work bench: 'D: TENIERS · FEC A 1671'. |
