Two Men Wrestling

1640s
Bronze, 41 x 21 x 22 cm
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

The most significant aspect of Ferdinando Tacca's work lies in his development of the bronze two-figure statuette group, from the complex and spiral format evolved by Giambologna: a number of such groups have been attributed to him. Tacca opened out his compositions, placing his figures in such a way as to emphasize a single, frontal view - a kind of miniature theatre. He thus provides a link between Giambologna and Giovanni Battista Foggini.

This bronze group was made in Tacca's workshop.
