Young Bacchus

1658-65
Bronze
Museo Civico, Prato

Ferdinando Tacca created the Fontana di Bacchino for Prato's main piazza (now in the Prato museum in Palazzo Pretorio). It depicts the young Bacchus (Bacchino) in bronze sitting around bunches of grapes. The fountain, with the figure crowning the shaft and basin like a monument, is not developed far beyond Giambologna's prototypes in the Boboli Gardens. The little bronze Bacchus on top of the fountain has High Baroque softness and roundness although one cannot overlook the faint family likeness to Verrocchio's putti.

The photo shows the original bronze figure in the Museo Civico in Palazzo Pretorio, Prato.
