Based in Memmingen, its earlier generations produced altarpieces in 15th-century Swabia and Switzerland. Hans Strigel I is known for works in Zell, near Oberstaufen: an altarpiece (1442) and murals in the choir (1446) that follow the 'Soft' style but are distinguished by originality and a certain individual grace. His sons Hans Strigel II and Ivo Strigel also produced altarpieces: the latter supplied them as far afield as Lake Constance, the Grisons and the Tyrol, being variously referred to as a painter or sculptor, but the evidence gives no clear picture of the range or exact nature of his activities. Bernhard Strigel, the son of either Hans II or Ivo, went on from the family's established area of work to paint portraits for the imperial court at Vienna.
