Two trees stand out against the sky. The delicate foliage is portrayed in great detail, and in the left-hand tree we can see young twigs which have burst forth after pruning. This study of nature is a unique work by Seghers, who mostly depicted fantastic landscapes. In this etching, Segers - unlike most other artists - used not only black ink, but also other colours. His etching technique enabled him to achieve very striking results - 'painting without (oil) paint'.
