SEGHERS, Gerard

Judith with the Head of Holofernes

1610s
Oil on canvas, 100 x 137 cm
Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica, Rome

In his years in Italy, Gerard Seghers conformed to the ideas of the Tenebrosi. From this period the only painting securely attributed to him is a Judith with the Head of Holofernes, a painting that is completely in line with the contemporary work of Caravaggio's first followers, such as Orazio Gentileschi or Orazio Borgianni.
