SANGALLO, Giuliano da
(b. 1445, Firenze, d. 1516, Firenze)

Tomb of Francesco Sassetti (detail)

1485-90
Pietra serena
Santa Trinita, Florence

Giuliano da Sangallo is known primarily as an architect; those sculptural programmes associated with him are usually allied with architecture and his sculptural activities remain obscure. One more securely attributed work is the Tomb of Francesco Sassetti, a learned manager of the Medici bank, which with its pendant for his wife Nera Corsi Sassetti is in the family chapel in Santa Trinita.

The picture shows a decorative relief in pietra serena.
