This is a late work of the artist with complex composition. His later works, such as this, are more restless and animated; the landscape is peopled with figures which play a more important role in the composition as a whole and there is greater emphasis on human incident.
The church in the background is the Groote Kerk (Big Church) at Alkmaar.
