ROBBIA, Luca della
(b. 1399/1400, Firenze, d. 1482, Firenze)

Madonna and Child

1440s
Painted and gilded terracotta and wood, diameter 37 cm
Private collection

This Madonna and Child was among the most popular compositions of Luca della Robbia. The technique of terracotta sculpture had been explored by both Ghiberti and Donatello in the second and third decades of the fifteenth century. In some instances the sculpture was modelled and was intended to be unique; in other cases, however, a mold was used with a view to replication. From this popular composition at least nine molded examples survived.
