Rippl-Rónai portrayed the musician Riccardo Viñes Roda, who lived in Paris, when the latter visited the artist's studio after his concert at the Music Academy in Budapest. The solemn-coloured expressive portrait depicts the figure of the Catalan pianist with a fine empathy. Rippl-Rónai's ability to show the mentality of the person he portrays can be seen in many portraits he made of his artist friends in the 1910s.
