Paso with Raising of the Cross

1604
Polychrome wood, life-size
Museo Nacional de Escultura, Valladolid

Rincón's Raising of the Cross is testimony to his singular talent. This piece is the earliest of a series of 'paso' or life-size processional groups of polychromed wood. Previously only the figures of Christ and the Virgin had been executed in wood in such groups, while the other scenes were constructed with ephemeral figures made of cardboard, which was, of course, much lighter.
