The Donation of Rome

Sala di Constantino, Palazzi Pontifici, Vatican

The Baptism of Constantine and the Donation of Rome depict ideal reconstructions of the Lateran Baptistery and Old Saint Peter's Church. The protagonists in these buildings follow the rules of papal ceremonies. In the Donation of Rome, in particular, the people are moved into the foreground as spectators: men, women, and children, young and old, the healthy and the ill - all of them greet the event with curiosity and joy.
