RAINALDI, Italian family of artists

Adriano Rainaldi (born 1597) was a painter and architect who became a member of the Accademia di San Luca, Rome, in 1554; he executed frescoes in the choir of Giacomo della Porta's San Luigi dei Francesi (consecrated 1589), Rome. His son Girolamo Rainaldi was active as an architect in Rome and northern Italy, working mainly in a conservative style. Girolamo's son Carlo Rainaldi, the most notable member of the family, was involved with some of the most impressive architectural projects in Rome in the 17th century, developing a style that was a highly individual version of the Roman High Baroque.
