The Infanta Isabella Clara Eugenia of Spain was born in Segovia on 12th August 1566. She was the child of Phillip II of Spain and his third wife Elizabeth of Valois. Her paternal grandparents were the emperor Charles V and Isabella of Portugal. Her maternal grandparents were Henry II of France and Catherine de Medici. As compensation and to celebrate her marriage (1599) with her cousin Albert of Habsburg, son of the Emperor Maximilian II, Isabella received the government of the Netherlands as her dowry.
