PORTA, Guglielmo della (b. ca. 1505, Porlezza, d. 1577, Roma) |
Tomb of Pope Paul III (detail)1549-75Bronze and marble Basilica di San Pietro, Vatican | |
The two allegorical figures represent the allegories of Justice and Prudence. It is assumed by some historians that Justice portrays Giulia, the pope's sister, while Prudence, with features similar to those of the Cumaean Sibyl on the Sistine Ceiling by Michelangelo, portrays Giovannella Caetani, the mother of Paul III. The picture shows the figure of Prudence. |
