Within the basin are 24 external and 34 internal columns, supporting a smaller 12-sided basin, the supports being carved with statuettes and the areas between them being left undecorated. From this there rises on a single stem a plain bronze basin, containing the main sculptural feature of the fountain, a bronze support with three female caryatides. Above this there must originally have been another smaller basin, but in the course of successive reconstructions of the fountain this has disappeared.
