PATEL, French family of painters

Pierre Patel [le bon; le père; l'aîné] (c. 1605-1676) dedicated himself exclusively to the art of landscape painting. About 40 paintings have been attributed to Patel, of which 12 are signed and dated. His son Pierre-Antoine [Pierre II] (1648-1707) learnt his skill as a painter from his father. Their canvases are often confused and at first sight are very similar. About 50 paintings by Pierre-Antoine survive, as well as gouaches.
