PAOLO ROMANO
(b. ca. 1415, Sezze, d. ca. 1470, Roma)

St Paul

1463-64
Marble
Ponte Sant'Angelo, Rome

A colossal marble statue of St Paul (1463-64) was made by Paolo for the top of the staircase near the Benediction Loggia (destroyed). The remarkably successful classicism of the St Paul is indicative of the sophistication of the revival of the Antique in Rome during these years, and its over life-size scale is in keeping with Pius II's ambition to restore Rome to its ancient splendour.

In 1535, Pope Clement VII allocated the toll income of Ponte Sant'Sngelo to erecting the statues of the apostles St Peter (holding a book) by Lorenzetto, and St Paul (holding a broken sword and a book) by Paolo Romano.

The picture shows the statue of St Paul with the Castel Sant'Angelo in the background.
