Peasant Family by a Hearth (detail)

1660
Oil on oak panel
Nationalmuseum, Stockholm

A family of peasants have gathered around the hearth in a rather untidy domestic interior. The mother, dressed in red and black, holds a tin cup, which a little girl is trying to grab, and looks over her shoulder at the boy and a girl on the left fighting over a jug of milk. On her right a peasant sitting next to the hearth and holding a pipe bends over to vomit on the floor. This seems to cause the man opposite him, seen from the back in the right foreground, to rise from his chair. Behind the mother and little girl a third peasant with a jug of wine gazes hazily at the scene and reaches up to scratch his head in a somewhat puzzled gesture. On the earthen floor several items lie scattered about, most prominently an overturned basket from which clothes are spilling out. A pig roots around in the background, while behind it a man with his back to us opens the door to the farmyard.
