Around 1625, Adriaen van Ostade painted several works including the present painting, which is generally regarded as a high point in his early career. These works are clearly indebted to the peasant scenes of Adriaen Brouwer who had been Van Ostade's fellow pupil in the studio of Frans Hals. Yet from the start Van Ostade chose to transform Brouwer's rawness and aggressiveness into a more polished image, which was satirical at first but, as his career evolved, gradually became more peaceful and bucolic.
