NICCOLÒ DA FOLIGNO
(b. ca. 1430, Foligno, d. 1502, Foligno)

Predella of an altarpiece

1492
Tempera on wood, height 39 cm
Musée du Louvre, Paris

These are the predella scenes of the altarpiece signed and dated 1492, painted for the chapel dedicated to St Nicholas of Bari in the church of San Nicolò in Foligno. The other elements of the polyptych remained in place.

The depicted scenes are (from left to right): Two angels carrying a cartouche; Christ in the Garden of Olives; Flagellation; Carrying the Cross; Crucifixion; Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus on the Way to Calvary.

The exacerbated pathos of the characters and their agitation reflect the influence on the Umbrian artist of both Carlo Crivelli and Luca Signorelli.
