In the spring of 1889 Monet was the guest of the poet and composer Maurice Rollinat in Fresselines, in the valley of the Creuse between Orléans and Limoges. He painted 23 landscapes here, treating motifs in different versions. The present painting belongs to a group of eight compositions which differs only in the condition of light.
