This is one of the twelve statues of the apostles in St Rumbold Cathedral in Mechelen. The major part of these statues had already been done earlier by the De Nole studio. Here the heavy and sculptural fall of the robe follows the pose and movement of the powerfully built body under it. Like the statues of the Mechelen ensemble, executed by the De Noles, the style of Van Mildert's apostle is related in spirit to the specifically sculptural character that was such a hallmark of Rubens's work of the years around 1615.
