The Sleeping Bacchante was shown at the Salon of 1761. To contemporaries there seemed something antique in the effect, though the graceful folds of drapery on which the totally nude figure lies look more neo-classic, while the mattress has an obtrusive, 'modern' appearance which rather mars the timelessness.
