This Lamentation group, today in the church of the Gesù in Ferrara, was originally executed for the church of Santa Maria della Rosa. It is composed of eight painted terracotta figures. The work is related to the Este family. The faces of Nicodemus and one of the Marys are thought to represent portraits of Ercole I and Eleonora d'Aragona, who probably commissioned the work.
