Like many other Italian artists, Mazzoni emigrated to France when Charles VIII returned there in 1496 after his coronation as King of Naples. Mazzoni was court sculptor first to Charles VIII and then to his successor Louis XII of France.
The individual figures in the life-size Death of the Virgin in Fécamp, which are carved in stone rather than modelled, are attributed to Mazzoni. The figures are close to Mazzoni's style but have many non-Italian features.
