The great stone reredos, decorated with a multitude of statues, is the most monumental piece of Renaissance sculpture in Spain. It was undertaken in 1528 by Juan Rodriguez Blas Hernandez and Jeronimo Pellicer. In its vast triptych composition it encompasses the two tombs of the founders of the monastery of the Hieronymites, executed by Juan Hernandez and Luis Giralde. The two sculptors were pupils of Vasco de la Zarza, a sculptor from Ávila who introduced Renaissance art into Old Castile. The classical style of Vasco de la Zarza, continued by his pupils, contrasts with the wild Mannerism that can be seen in Alonso Berruguete's reredos of San Benito in Valladolid, begun at the same time as this one.
