Maiestas Domini with the Apostles

c. 1200
Tempera on wood
Palacio Episcopal, Astorga

This is a reliquiary with painted front panel which is a characteristic example of the the early 13th century painting in Castile and León. In medieval art the position of the Apostles is bound by strict hierarchy, at Christ's sides usually Apostles Peter and Paul can be found. However, in this panel the position of Paul is occupied by St James, the converter of Spain.
