Decorative Pseudo Ewer

c. 1600
Brush and pen, grey ink, diameter 368 mm
Szépművészeti Múzeum, Budapest

This high quality drawing, cited in the literature as a design for an ewer, can hardly be regarded as such since it bears far closer resemblance to a decorative depiction that merely imitates such a design. A characteristic feature of the work is that it is composed from imaginary creatures and object motifs are almost entirely lacking.
