The artist, whose monogram of a W and an A with a key or cross appears on the second state of this print, was active in Bruges during the reign of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy (1467-77). Most of his 81 prints were intended as models for other artists.

The artist is referred to as Master W with the Key.
