MASTER of Saint Veronica
(active 1400-1420 in Cologne)

The Man of Sorrow with the Virgin and St Catherine

1400-20
Panel, 41 x 24 cm
Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp

This refined little work of German origin is an illustrative example of the so-called International Style. Some fifty works have been attributed to an unknown Cologne master, referred to for convenience as the Master of Saint Veronica, including The Man of Sorrows with the Virgin and Saint Catherine. The panel's slender, almost boneless figures, depicted against a gilded ground, its combination of colours and its delicate mysticism make it characteristic of the medieval Cologne school. The oeuvre of this master is generally dated between 1400-1420.
