French painters of the fifteenth century were close to van der Goes's art. The Master of St Gilles emulated the exquisitely cool but emotional colours of the Netherlandish artist, whose evocative use of space and sensitive scrutiny of physiognomy is here felt far beyond the southern Netherlands.
